Using archival material, this project has been an exploration of the nature of the photograph and its presence as an object. The image has a conflicting ability to hold a single moment in time yet inability to retain a stable meaning in different contexts, and I have pushed this by creating contextual paradoxes between original and reproduction.
In conversation with Barthes’ 'punctum', and Bacon’s 'space frame', the work shows us how photographs capture every detail of a moment, not just the photographer’s intentions. And despite there always being an imposed frame that the moment lives in, we can always find more, isolate it, give it a new energy, and break it free from the original.
Exhibited in the ‘Para’ Exhibition at The Poly, Falmouth. 2018.
